Unfortunately, until further notice, Old Cottage, Tigh Cargaman
and the other two properties at Tigh Cargaman,
will not be accepting bookings at this time.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.
This thick stoned walled 2 storey detached cottage is believed to have been part of the original hamlet of croft cottages on the ancient Tigh Cargaman site. This is larger than The Stables but is of a similar old world charm with comfortable furnishings. Of particular note is that these cottages are set opposite the largest beach in Port Ellen and have lovely views of the sea and the distinctive Carraig Fhada lighthouse beyond. A frequent spectacle each day is watching the Calmac Ferry which seems to line up and head straight for the host’s large Victorian villa before doing it’s sharp turn into the Port just hidden from view.
The entrance door leads into the dining room, the hub of the cottage with the staircase rising to the first floor and the kitchen, shower room and cosy lounge opening off it. The kitchen is compact but perfectly well equipped and also includes a washing machine too. The tiled shower room (with wash basin and WC) on the ground floor makes a handy place to clean up after a day on the beach opposite. The cosy lounge is dual aspect, with views of the garden on either side, and a 2 seater sofa and 2 armchairs facing the feature electric ‘Wood Burner’ and TV.
Upstairs you will find 2 comfortable bedrooms. The double bedroom has views over the rear rockery garden with its wild flowers, ancient trees and frequent wildlife visitors. It has a Victorian style metal double bed, with a comforting electric blanket, bedside cabinets, chest of drawers as well as a fitted wardrobe and a wash basin. The Twin Bedroom has lovely views over the extensive front lawn with beach, sea and lighthouse beyond. It also has bedside cabinets, chest of drawers, a desk, a fitted wardrobe and wash basin and the comfort of electric blankets too.
Although it’s convenient location, a short stroll from Port Ellen, the ferry, the Three Distilleries Footpath and on the bus route for the rest of the island too means it’s perfect for travellers without a car, for those with a car off road parking is provided on the shared drive. The Host welcomes guests to use the seating and the large front lawn in front of the main house.
With the large beach just opposite and only a 5 minute scenic stroll into the centre of Port Ellen, with arguably the best range of facilities on the island, this cottage, like it’s neighbour The Stables, earns its place in our club for being a peaceful little haven in a fab location and with a friendly host too.
