A cosy 2 bed cottage, oozing with old world charm in a fab location opposite the beach in Port Ellen with views of the Lighthouse. The warmth of the host and it’s peaceful pretty garden setting makes this a favourite with returning guests.
A cosy little detached stone cottage, formerly the Stables and now converted to a 2 bedroom, (both with sea views) cosy cottage all on one level, so perfect for anyone with restricted mobility or young children. It’s almost hidden from view in the corner of the Host’s extensive gardens and to it’s rear it has it’s own private lawned area, although you often have to share it with the deer at night! Of particular note is that these cottages are set opposite the largest beach in Port Ellen and have lovely views of the sea and the distinctive Carraig Fhada lighthouse beyond. A frequent spectacle each day is watching the Calmac Ferry which seems to line up and head straight for the host’s large Victorian villa before doing it’s sharp turn into the Port just hidden from view.
The entrance to this little stone cottage is directly into it’s lounge/diner with the focal point being the feature electric ‘Wood Burner’. There is a two seater sofa, 2 armchairs and a wooden dining table seating four as well as the TV, bookcase and side table. The kitchen might be compact but it houses everything you need for a comfortable stay including a handy washing machine and all the usual kitchen equipment. The kitchen and lounge look out on the rear rockery garden shaded by ancient trees and usually full of wild flowers, birds, deer and even a resident hedgehog.
Through the back hall there is a large walk in storage cupboard, ideal for storing your suitcases, golf clubs etc. The Master Bedroom has a pine double bed with cosy electric blanket for those chilly mortals, bedside cabinets, a fitted wardrobe and a handy wash basin. The second bedroom has 2 twin divan beds again having electric blankets, bedside cabinets, a fitted wardrobe and also a wash basin too, taking pressure of the family bathroom in the morning! The family bathroom off the back hall has a full length bath with electric shower over and a glass screen, another wash basin and the WC.
Although it’s convenient location, a short stroll from Port Ellen and the ferry and on the bus route for the rest of the island means it’s perfect for travellers without a car, for those with a car off road parking is provided on the shared drive. The host welcomes guests to use the seating and the large front lawn in addition to the small private lawn area to the rear of the Stables.
With the beach just opposite and only a scenic 5 minute stroll into the centre of Port Ellen, with arguably the best range of facilities on the island, this cottage earns it’s place in our club for being a peaceful little haven in a fab location and with a friendly host too.
